SANTORINI DESTINATION

BORN FROM TEPHRA
(in the words of George Meis)

How was this magnificent landscape created? The entire region, with a diameter of almost 40 kilometers

is an active volcano that for 20.000 years is gradually building new land from lava.

The last decisive eruption occurred 3.600 years ago, when the island Stronghyle existed,

was one of the most violent the face of Earth has seen. The entire central part of Stronghyle

was vertically cut off and demolished in the depths of the Aegean sea.

A gigantic crater was formed with a diameter of 12 kilometers. The sides of the crater (=Caldera)

are the remains of the fragmented in three Stronghyle. The present islands of Santorini, Therasia,

and Aspronisi with their “Caldera” were born.

After the eruption the surface of the islands was covered by a deep layer of white, thick and thin tephra (=pumice),

while the landscape was bombed with black stones coming out of the crater. No trace of life was left on the islands .

The volcano always remains alive…..

Entering the breathtaking  Caldera you can feel entering the territory of the volcano.

To the left, on the cliffs of Oia and to  the right on those of Riva, Therasia, you can see the volcanic “cake”

with layers of red, ochre and black lava with intermediate layers of tephra and burned rocks.

You realize you’re in the center of a dynamic field, very close to the nostrils of the newborn land, fuming hot breath.

Welcome to the most beautiful Caldera in the world, a magnificent monument of nature!
